My name is Nicolene and I’m a bibliophile
Noun [ C ] /ˈbɪb.li.ə.faɪl/ formal
A person who collects or has a great love of books.
If there was an AA for being addicted to books you wouldn’t find me there. You’d find me in any place with books in them; a CNA, an old book store, a new book store, a doctor’s office that doesn’t only have magazines on the table in the corner, or at a friend’s house sniffing books. Yes, really breathing in that book scent and getting giddy on it.
As a self-proclaimed book whore (yes, I read more than one book at a time AND from different authors. Gasp!) I hardly ever go anywhere without a book tucked away somewhere. And if I forgot to bring a book, I’ll buy a new one. I’ve even been accused by my hometown library of stealing one of their books (which, in this case, wasn’t true…). So, when I say that I’m a bibliophile, I really mean that I’m fully obsessed with books, don’t have enough bookshelves for all my books, will buy more books when there are books at home that I haven’t read yet, and will happily reread the same book for years if it tickled my fancy.
Like any kid born in the nineties, I wanted to escape from the world into a place where things were different. A place where I wasn’t an awkward, gawky, grasshopper-legged weirdo with a skew front tooth. And after driving my mom stark-raving mad with my questions on why don’t sharks drown under water, why are some people bad and others not, why can only some birds fly, why can’t I fly, she decided to teach me how to read and once I had that down, there was no stopping me.
By the end of my high school career I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do for a living, but I knew that my biggest passion in the whole world will have to feature in it somehow. I figured I could become a librarian, but quickly realised that despite being surrounded by stacks and stacks of books, I’d actually be bored out of my skull. Then I went completely off course and decided that my future is science!
So, I ended up forging my life’s work out of words by making language my lifeblood (which, in itself, is a form of science without the vials.).
You’ll still find me in the corner of the book store sniffing the pages of a particularly fat volume. But nowadays, I no longer read to escape, but to learn and hone my skills.
My name is Nicolene.
And I’m a language nerd with a passion for all things wordy.
