Reimagining the shape of music
Music group Deca, is known locally for capturing the hearts of many through their charming take on pop music. The Sum of 21 (SO21) team is known for their fresh take on creative concepts and their love for digital art. The coming together of an experienced music group and fresh designers has led to the creation of magic.
Douw Steyn, a guitarist, and Herman Steyn, violinist, form part of the debut music group Deca. The word Deca originates from the Greek word ‘ten’, which represents the violin, which has 4 strings and the guitar which has 6 strings. They are known for their unique and charismatic interpretation of popular music which has allowed them to appeal to a large audience. As a band, their focus is not just directed at performing music covers, they released their debut album, Black Sails early 2017 which features their original work. Deca performed at farmer’s markets and private booked events to find which of their songs received the best audience reaction to determine which songs would best fit their album.

Deca approached the SO21 team to create a video which showcases their musical talent. The video is a performance of their unique take on Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, “It’s cool way to fuse an African flavour to an international song,” says Tony, a designer at SO21. The creatives brought their music to life by concentrating on the relationship between the artist and musical instrument. The concept of the video is a play-off between the violin and guitar, so in each scene there is a focus on both the violin and guitar.
The SO21 warehouse was transformed into a musical studio where magic was produced for a day. “On set every moment counts, so I was exposed to the importance of planning and using a storyboard,” says Andile, a designer for SO21. The designers learnt to constantly engage with the client during the shoot and the importance of lighting to create different effects in the video. After some smoke bombs, laughter and beautiful live music, Ed Sheeran’s hit single was transformed into Deca’s Shape of You instrumental.
The designers behind the cameras found the experience fun and challenging, for most of them it was their first time shooting a music video. The designers were pushed out of their comfort zones and they produced magic in their ‘discomfort’. The video is expected to be released in August 2017.
